Matrix
The hidden tissue under the base of the nail where new nail cells are produced — damage here can permanently affect nail growth.
The matrix is the nail's growth factory, located beneath the eponychium. It produces the keratin cells that become the visible nail plate. Because it's living tissue, trauma or aggressive filing near the matrix can cause permanent ridges or deformities.
