Eponychium

The living fold of skin at the base of the nail that produces and protects the cuticle and seals the matrix from infection.

The eponychium is the living skin at the very base of the nail. It should never be cut, as it forms a protective seal over the matrix. Only the dead cuticle tissue on the nail plate should be removed during a manicure.
